CTI's pearl millet thresher and grinder are hand-operated tools for processing grains that significantly reduce postharvest loss, improve grain quality, and are more efficient than the traditional mortar and pestle. CTI introduced its updated pearl millet thresher to Senegal's smallholder market. With 95 percent of the 3.9 million farmers in West Africa using the mortar and pestle to thresh millet, use of the thresher can increase farmer productivity by a quarter.
Outcome: CTI has sold 186 individual grinders and threshers suites, which more than 400 farmer households are using. CTI plans to manufacture the tools locally with a private sector partner to reduce the sales price by 35 percent. Within five years, CTI estimates that 1,000 farmer communities and cooperatives, reaching 16,200 individuals, will have purchased the thresher.
