Eighty percent of Zambian maize comes from smallholder farmers and up to 30 percent is lost postharvest. To address this problem, AGCO, with local distributor GSI Africa, is selling metal grain storage silos to village-based grain traders, increasing the availability of effective storage for smallholders. AGCO will also provide training on equipment operation and the grain management business. Demonstration units have been installed with aggregators, providing a direct relationship between farmers and the market.

Outcome: Forty silos will be sold to grain traders, providing access to grain storage for more than 12,000 smallholder farmers.
